It is about China, Chinese Americans, robots, the effect of technology on our lives and the China moment in American consciousness,” said Olsen, referring to China’s current economic ascendance that is changing the dynamic in the U.S.-Chinese relationship. China Doll centers on a successful California construction subcontractor, his Asian American wife who is a university professor, and a robot as they straddle both sides of the Pacific with extended families on two continents. As someone who grew up on Chinese Family Drama, the flesh/blood as well as TV variety, I actually happen to think that remixing CFD as sci fi would be about the only way to make it watchable. I’m all for humanoid robots - and have a deep fondness for Star Trek’s Data - but the name “China Doll” just stops me cold.
If the “China Doll” turns out to be teenage fembot, just kill me. Unless the title refers to the “Asian American wife” - I can’t decide if that’s more or less EEEW.
